Taking Stock of Your Home's Security: Advice from a Northampton Locksmith

If you're planning to upgrade your home's security, it's important to do so in an organised and disciplined way. A hasty or ill-conceived decision today can mean a burglary or worse in the future. Here are some important tips for creating a safe and secure home from your local Northampton locksmith.

First, Determine Your Risk

This is perhaps the most important step in improving your home's security. Contact your local police and ask if they have a crime prevention officer who can help you create a sound and workable plan. Also, find out if your area has a neighbourhood watch. If it does, join. By talking to your neighbours, you'll be able to get an accurate idea of the type and frequency of crime in your area. It's also a good idea to check with your insurance company to obtain crime statistics for your locality. An insurance company usually will have plenty of suggestions for helping home owners secure their homes and property. Insurers generally can confirm for you what types of crime, if any, are occurring in your neighbourhood.

Next, Frankly Assess Your Risk

In 1998 and 1999, a crime survey in the UK identified a wide variety of factors that may increase your risk of a burglary. Some urban areas, such as those in the inner city, as well as living in a detached home were cited as factors. However, the primary finding was the residents who do not take measures to secure their homes and properties are more likely to be burglarised. If you live in the country, your risk is somewhat lower, about 2.5%, but not much. It is worth noting, though, that burglaries in rural homes have decreased in the period between 1998 and 2000, largely because increasing numbers of rural residents are installing security measures.

Determine the Security Measures You Need

It may sound odd, but the best way to assess your level of risk is to think like a burglar. Look for weaknesses that a burglar could exploit. Burglary is a crime of stealth and opportunity. If your home presents significant obstacles to a potential burglar, chances are he'll move on and look for another target. Strive to present your home as quite secure by having strong and well-maintained gates, fences, locks, doors, windows and grounds. Be sure to note how far you are from police and fire stations and have their telephone numbers posted prominently in your home. Your family's daily routine also may make you an attractive target, if people leave and return home at the same times, especially on weekdays. Once you've identified weaknesses, prioritise them and fashion a plan around those priorities. Only then should you select and buy the relevant home security devices. Once you've implemented your plan, be sure to send a copy to your insurance company -- often security upgrades will earn you a discount.

For assistance with these and other home security issues, be sure to contact your local Northampton locksmith.
